OUR BOOK OF THE MONTH NOV 2026 and dates
Back then we waited for album releases, we waited for local records stores to have the albums, we had little preview, we weren’t sure what to expect. JWH was a shock! But also we were getting older, we were adrift, we had faced political issues and had been turned away. What would Dylan say?
Compouned here by the aftermath of Dylan’s motorcycle accident and his disappearance (retreat?) to Woodstock and environs
Even MORE cryptic, as if in retreat from everyday world of the present
Ideas for JWH Back Pages
Long to short songs; short album in minutes
No choruses (except for I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight) and no bridges
Crowded electric music to sparse rural (but not country) sound
Shocking musical style, from that the preceding trilogy and compared to albums like Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band—from psychodelic, from complex studio effects
JWH seemed to care little for selling records in the sense that his sounds and subjects did not initially capture the audience BUT this also showed he was doing serious things with a sense of diretion and purpose, even if we were clueless
We didn't know yet but it sure seems different than the basement tapes and the lack of overlap seems to stress dylans need for privacy in its creation
And one of most integrated, like r and r wow
Cul de sac?
Pure sarcasm, disdain, existentialism, beat poetry gone, a tighter look at america and not just from looking out from desolation row
Gone simplistic utopian liberal view, king and rfk too
Summer of love yields to hot summer...and how did that fire go out?
Then my level one interest
